Now that colder weather has arrived, we finally have a chance to experience the impact of your work in sealing up the leaks in the attic and band joist.  We turned the heat on for the first time yesterday when the heating technician was here because the house has been holding temperature very well requiring only an hour or so of heat from the fireplace.  Last night we turned down the thermostat at 9:30 when the temperature in the house was 69 degrees. We normally keep it at 68, but the heating tech had it running to do the combustion tests. This morning, the temperature at 6 AM was 67 degrees with an outside temperature of 36!  The house lost only 2 degrees overnight. Last year the change would have been more like a 6 or 7 degree drop. The house is definitely more comfortable now.   
 

It has been almost two weeks since Southland Insulators were here to insulate and air seal our attic and storage area.  I am writing to acknowledge the courteous professionalism of our Southland Insulators representative.

I am writing this letter in appreciation of the excellent work your company performed in my home a few months ago. At that time, the temperature in my home, a rambler built in the late 1970ies, was very unevenly distributed, meaning the front side of the home was quite comfortable, while the backside was cold in winter and hot in summer. In winter the heat pump was running for long hours to keep the house warm and in summer the A/C was running most of the time to keep the home reasonably cool. Electricity bills were high. There was also an amazing level of dust in the home which I could never understand where it came from.

A comprehensive building analysis by you revealed that extensive work was needed to improve the thermal envelope of my home, the energy efficiency, as well as the indoor air quality. You suggested air sealing the attic, the basement and the crawl space. You also suggested raising the existing R-12 value of the insulation up to a total R-value of R-49. In addition, you made a number of other very helpful suggestions to attain our goal of improved energy efficiency and indoor air quality.

I want to thank you especially for accommodating my need to have the different insulation products tested as to which one would be most suitable in view of my sensitivities to environmental chemicals. As a result of the testing we choose to use RCD #6 Mastic for the air sealing and Knauf Ecco Formaldehyde Free Batts for insulation.

Having lived for a few months with the results of the work performed, I can testify that the improvements of the indoor air quality are significant, and the home has an evenly distributed temperature level. There is hardly any dust in the home. Last but not least, I am very happy that the constant visits of all kinds of beetles have ceased, thanks to the excellent job of air sealing the house from top to bottom.

My complements to you for choosing your crew members. They performed the work in the most professional manner, always starting early in the morning, always courteous and mindful of my home. They covered the floors with protective plastic and at the end of the day, there was no sign of work being done. The home was left in a clean totally satisfactory state. The work was completed in a timely manner in spite of inclement weather and some unforeseen equipment challenges.

Your company was recommended to me by a builder friend who has worked with you for decades. I am glad I listened to my friend’s advice because you have exceeded all expectations. I wanted to send a message to you and your crews to compliment your professionalism and quality work. You did a great job in giving me advice and explaining what was going to happen on my insulation project. Your crews were here very early and on time. They staged out on the road so they wouldn't disturb my family before the start time we agreed to. As soon as I saw they were out there I told them to feel free to get started. They even asked about the neighbors, who I knew were already off to work. And they went well into the evening to assure completion of the job. I appreciated their easygoing approach. There were are few complications they faced and they properly solved the problems with good humor. They also answered every question I had. I selected Southland Insulators to complete my attic project (it required lifting an attic floor and properly installing the correct type of insulation which was no small job by any means). They sent me three outstanding young men who not only worked hard but also worked smart. I was impressed and as you know, I am not easily impressed. Their prices are most competitive for the quality of work that I had done.

My wife and I had bathroom plumbing over the garage that froze and burst in January 2009 and 2010. Since half the garage's ceiling was removed to facilitate repairs, we decided to address the unusual coldness of the bathroom's floor. We called a couple insulation companies but Southland was able to beat the other competitors. Southland was not only willing to spray foam underneath the bathroom flooring but was able to spray foam the bathroom's exterior (vertical) walls with their Icynene products. The effectiveness of the Icynene was immediate because we noticed that this bathroom floor was now slightly warmer than our master bathroom.

Since we were very impressed not only with the product's effectiveness but with the company's professionalism (the team showed up on time, is thorough, clean and willing to address any issues that might arise), we decided in April 2010 to have our attic ceiling completely sealed with Icynene. We did our research to determine if there were any issues from others who used Icynene in their attic. After weighing all the pros and cons, and based on our experience with our bathroom, we decided to go for it. Again, we were quite impressed with the thoroughness of Southland's efforts. The team not only filled in all the open spacing but also covered over the joists (but with enough visible outline) whereby most companies do not treat the joists. At first we were concerned because there was a strong odor the first night after the work was completed, but this quickly dissipated in about a day and a half and we have not experiences any additional off gassing.

Overall, we give Southland Insulators an A++. Thank you, Southland Insulators!

Before adding insulation, my 21 year old A/C unit could barely keep the temperature lower than 82 (degrees) on the top floor and was running 1-2 hours at a time with no more than 15-30 minute breaks during hot days. Now, the upstairs stays at 77 (degrees) and the A/C runs 30 minutes at a time with 2-3 hour breaks. All in all it (has) made a huge differenced and looking back I should have done this 2-3 years ago.

Just a note to say your crew did an excellent job today. They not only moved all of our junk out of the way in order to do their work – but they did it with a smile. (Your team member) is charming and friendly and deserving of whatever good things might come his way.

Although the roofing contractor fell behind schedule – ripping off a 50-year old roof was hard work – the Southland crew was excellent. They got up on the roof as soon as possible, did an excellent job with some of the surprises (no ceiling over two closets) and completed their work efficiently and completely. Southland was the best performer of the three contractors I had to deal with.

Last fall I engaged Southland Insulators to upgrade the insulation and weather sealing in my 2004 home. Though my home had the higher level of insulation and sealing of newer homes, an energy audit indicated areas for improvement. Southland upgraded the existing insulation by adding cellulose insulation. In addition I had the exterior/interior plates sealed and the pipes, sump pump and miscellaneous other items sealed. Southland produced a photographic record of the before and after for each area where work was performed, and was neat and pleasant during the two day installation. Their workers were careful to deliver the cellulose insulation through a sealed tube to the attic and wore work boot covers within my home. Very little mess was made. I was very satisfied that the work was performed in a professional manner in all the areas of the attic and crawl spaces were sealed.

My home is heated and cooled with a dual system; the upstairs with a heat pump and the lower levels with a gas furnace and air conditioner. After six months my electricity usage (as measured in kilowatts) has been reduced by 6% and my gas (liquid propane) usage reduced 25%.More importantly to me is the overall comfort in the bedroom over the garage and the master bedroom has been vastly improved. Until I had the additional insulation installed I could not keep those two bedrooms comfortable with the heat pump. Overall, we are very satisfied with the results of the money spent.
